Free, anonymous medication disposal helps protect families and environment
(CLAIR | Moorpark, CA) — Moorpark residents have a chance to make their homes and community safer this spring. The Moorpark Police Department joins a nationwide initiative on Saturday, April 25, 2026, giving families a secure way to dispose of unused prescription medications.
The National Take Back Day event runs from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the Moorpark Police Station, located at 610 Spring Road. The Drug Enforcement Administration coordinates this program across the country, creating a safe pathway for communities to clear dangerous medications from medicine cabinets and kitchen counters.
As explained in the initiative's goals, "This program saves lives while protecting our environment." Unused medications pose real risks — they can fall into the wrong hands, cause accidental poisonings, or create environmental hazards when flushed or thrown away improperly.
The process stays completely anonymous. Residents can bring medications in their original containers or remove pills and liquids to place directly into secure receptacles at the station. No questions asked, no paperwork required.
Law enforcement officials accept most prescription medications during the event. Solid pills, capsules, and liquid medications in consumer containers all qualify for safe destruction. Cough syrups and similar liquids should stay in their original containers with caps sealed tight.
The program maintains clear safety boundaries. Intravenous solutions, injectable medications, and syringes cannot be accepted due to potential blood-borne pathogen risks. The initiative focuses on prescription medications only — illicit substances like marijuana or methamphetamine fall outside this program's scope, though the Ventura County Sheriff's Office handles those materials through separate reporting procedures.
A uniformed deputy will staff the station throughout the event, ready to answer questions and assist residents with the disposal process. The straightforward approach makes participation easy for busy families looking to clear expired or unnecessary medications safely.
